The following example is for the older style tool. The new style can still perform this way, or you can use the longer gauge when placing the ribbons/devices.
An example of how to use the Uniform Utility Tool™ with a set of ribbons:
Step 1: Rest tool against ribbons and visually center the ribbons on the pocket.
Step 2: Line up ribbons with correct marking (Army & Marine Corps 1/8″, Navy & Coast Guard 1/4″).
Step 3: Pull shirt up into the first prong and put on “frog”.
Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 for other side of ribbons.
Step 5: Add any warfare insignia by butting the device between the ribbons and the tool.
As you may have figured out by now, the Uniform Utility Tool™ is also a very useful for performing uniform inspections. Simply place the appropriate measurement in the space you are inspecting to ensure the placement is correct, very similar to a gauge.
